Set in motion shortly after the terrorist attacks of 911, the USA Patriot Act sought to equalize the playing field with regard to the very real potential for duplicate assault against Americans on their own soil. The extent to which the Act serves to intercept terrorist activity, protect national freedom & illustrate the country's continued strength as a superpower is both grand and far-reaching; that it was designed to apply a comprehensive safeguard from both a national and international perspective speaks to the Act's tremendous scope. However, as many good points as can be attributed to the Act, there are just as many questionable ones – arbitrary monitoring, surveillance and compromised personal privacy and liberties - that continue to fuel debate.
